Spring is the time of year we sometimes feel the need to have some type of rebirth; with flowers in bloom and summer just around the corner; the pressure is on to also to upgrade you personal regimen from your makeup, wardrobe and get your fitness routine in check before swimsuit season. Although, with all of these changes come with a big Cha-Ching!!
As a 42-year old mother of two, corporate marketing career girl turned health and wellness buff I find it increasingly difficult to keep up all of the regimens that I love while sticking to a reasonable family budget. I can’t be the only one who feels as though I am drowning in pool of wasted lotion, makeup and gym memberships? And then comes the remorse buy, beating ourselves up with each purchase mumbling to yourself, “Why did I buy this, I don’t even use it?”
With the overwhelming amount of health, wellness, beauty options out there it seems challenging to even know where to start. I mean I could spend my entire day trying every new boutique gym class and cutting-edge beauty treatment on the market to see what sticks, but that is just not reality. I am always looking for ways to get best results, save time and make my dollar stretch!
Here are just a few of my ‘go-to’ work around tips for best results and savings!
Holy Mother! When it comes to skincare it is a blessing and curse to live in 2018—we have so many options! To know what works and what doesn’t could literally send anyone into a minor anxiety attack. Over the last 10 years, I have talked to many doctors and med spa professionals in a plethora of cities across the U.S. about this topic.
Remember—keep it simple! First thing’s first, a high-quality moisturizer is a MUST. Make sure it has a strong SPF 30 plus with UVA/UVB. Next is to make sure your skin care regimen prevents aging skin, in my opinion stick with a potent Retinal cream & Hydroquinone (skin lightener). I started using both of these in my early 30’s and still do today!
Bonus: If you are in Mexico or know a friend is going anytime soon plan to raid their duty free shop, they sell Retina for next to nothing! *If using Retina in sun use extra sunscreen.
Even at 42, I am still trying to learn how to put on a decent face of makeup. To be totally honest, when I see flawless makeup on celebrities sometimes I get jelly! My makeup talents are very bare bones so I go for what I know typically boring and predictable. Nevertheless, I have spent my fair share buying products to see what works and what does not. The green eye shadow, the purple liner, the green liner all convinced buy at one makeup counter or another and never put to good use! Grrrr….
Stop this madness right now! It’s time to make the beauty/make-up counters work for me and you! My rule—I will only buy makeup when taking my entire makeup bag and brushes into a store sitting down with a makeup artist and having them tell me what I may need to replace or tweak to my current stash. This way when buying new products I’m only buying what I need and the sales person will see the entire picture instead of suggesting things I may or may not have leading to unnecessary purchasing. And remember never make a purchase without having a makeup artist try the options on you before purchasing anything new!
Best Bang: Trying on makeup at a counter should ALWAYS be free of charge—never pay for this service! Be upfront, tell them you need help and you brought your makeup bag with you. I go to my local Blue Mercury and it has stopped me from purchasing products I don’t use!
Ahhh, the love of classes, class passes, yoga, gyms, trainers, boot camps, boxing gyms and every other endorphin boosting option. I love it all and hope to integrat more yoga for my sanity sooner than later! Reality—the majority of us do not have the budget to engage in every option. There are so many stellar different workouts, but the most important part—what will you do be consistent every week? What will motivate you to get to the gym? Set a goal to break a sweat at least 3 times per week for 30 minutes. Even though these classes rock, taking one Orange Theory or SoulCycle class per week is just not going to cut it to create our desired results!
Best Bang: Majority of gyms and specialized studios typically give a free trial class, try for free before you buy! If you purchase it, use it and do not waste it! Embrace the outdoors when weather permits, run outside, power walk with hand weights, play tennis with a friend on free public court and invest in a bike and ride it! I love my hybrid bike, but you need to find the simple activities that excite you and get you going! Sometimes it’s not about what activity you are doing, but having a partner in crime to do it with makes all the difference! Think of it as a free coach to get you moving!
Take some inventory and strategize on how you want to step in to your best spring without breaking the bank! Cheers to staying fit, fab and young from the inside out!
